So the 36th Cross Country Ski National competition had begun at last! Shannon had a good start and was running on thirteenth place when she completed about one fourth of the total distance. She arrived to the shooting area eighth and, I swear, I could see her pulling her gun out to shoot. In general, contestants were Skiing very close in terms of timing that day so shooting well was detrimental for their success. Three leading girls (from Washington D.C., Alaska, and Montana, I believe), missed two targets and were penalized to run two additional circles. Four other participants in front of Shannon, shot well, but neither of them had an excellent shooting. When Shannon reached the shooting, she shot a little slowly than usual but she terminated all targets! I thought I was going to die from excitement attack at that moment but the competition was not over yet. Shannon had to outrun three other girls in front of her to win the contest. And she ran! Shannon reached the finish line the third and was looked immensely happy with her performance. She waived at me at the finish and then waived again at a strange man in a fluffy red coat, who appeared to be acquainted with her. I did not see the man’s face but asked Shannon who he was right away at our meeting. “Surprise!” she said and pointed her finger toward somebody behind my back. I turned around and saw our dearest Papa John approaching in a red fluffy coat. “I happened to come around you guys in Aspen,” he said winking at Shannon. “Good job, kid, you know what you are doing!” he continued hugging both of us with his warm hands. Then I remembered Shannon’s suspicious smiling back at home, when she ran to her bedroom. Her grandpa and she cooperated once more and this time not in cross country Skiing but in fooling me. We had a blast after the competition was over and visited one of the nicest restaurants in the town of the welcoming Aspen Ski Resort.
