Before the competition |
|
| The
next morning was sunny and, as Shannon agreed, perfect for the competition.
The snow appeared soft, the wind calm, and the people cheerful, which
was the perfect mix for a good time. Shannon and a couple of other girls
were running for the state of Minnesota and, therefore, had big bold
blue letters “MN” reflecting on their shirts. That made quite
easy for Minnesota fans to notice them on the mainly white background.
All teams were instructed to run for five kilometers and shoot five targets
fifty meters away half way to the finish line. I practically held my
breath until the very beginning of the contest. Before I tell you about
the competition itself, I need to tell you about Shannon’s practice
all these years. After her grandpa, Papa John, taught her to ski, Shannon
decided to seriously train at our Minnesota National Sports Club. She
had begun practicing every day with nationally renowned coaches and was
an excellent athlete...until she got in a car accident. It is very difficult
to talk about those days now, but I would like to point out to you, my
reader, how courageous and determined my daughter was about the sport she loved. In the car accident Shannon broke her left arm badly, which, in the beginning, prevented her from using her hands and sticks to accelerate on the snow. She had to memorize and practice hundreds of exercises to bring her arm back to full functioning. Shannon, for example, went to the swimming lessons for the whole year to achieve a better flexibility in her left arm. In addition to all those, Shannon continued to go to school, Skiing and shooting exercises. It took her around three full years to get back in shape and made her incredibly happy when the arm was healed. Until Shannon was completely recovered from her trauma, Shannon’s coach banned her from participating in competitions, and today was actually the first time since she was well and ready again to compete. |
